FERROEQUINOLOGY

THE PRESERVATION AGE

West Country 4-6-2 34092 "City of Wells" drifts the Scarborough Spa Express  back into York on a summer evening, while below, "Evening Star", Standard 9F 2-10-0, the last steam engine built for British Rail, heads south out of York with a special in August 1978.

SIR NIGEL

Above, "Sir Nigel Gresley", an A4 streamlined 4-6-2

named after its designer, comes off the Forth Bridge

on 20th May 1967 with a southbound special, and

below, passing Copmanthorpe, south of York,

in April 1978

Back to 1967, when Sir Nigel was particularly busy, here being turned on the turntable at Carlisle Kingmoor on 28th October, watched by admiring tour participants,

Moving off the turntable ready for the next leg of the tour.

THE INEVITABLE FLYING FLOTSAM

Due, no doubt, to the efforts of its various misguided owners, LNER 4472,  BR 60103,  "Flying Scotsman", A3 Pacific, had and continues to have a special place in the affections of the media, and possibly the public.  Here she is, in her  two-tenders days, heading North from Edinburgh through Dalmeny on 25th May 1968.
and here, returning South later the same day.

Below, at right, "Flying Scotsman" at Edinburgh Waverley on 4th May 1968 - this is one of my favourite views of the old villain.

And at left, below, she accelerates North from York on 14th September 1975.
